Happy Friday!
We are literally in the deep freeze here in Central Ontario this morning. When I woke up the temperature was at -37C with the wind chill and believe me, I did not want to get out from under the covers! It’s supposed to warm up to a balmy -15C this afternoon (that’s about 5F for my U.S. friends) and I still have to make my way over to the lab to get my bloodwork done. It was so much easier when there was a lab across the road from me!
I’m going to be working all morning … it usually takes me most of the morning to get a newsletter together for you, and I’ll be honest… it feels like it might be time to make some changes. I’m going to spend some time this weekend analyzing all the stats for the last month or two of newsletters and work out a plan for going forward.
And that brings me to the subject of today’s read… auditing your emails. I’ll admit, it’s not something I’ve ever really taken the time to do before so I’m looking forward to digging in and seeing what the numbers have to say.
Today’s Read: 5 More Email Metrics To Keep an Eye On
In order to get the most out of your email marketing, you should be checking your stats every so often. Now, I’ll be the first to admit I don’t do this nearly as often as I should either, but if we’re going to level up our email game, knowing the numbers are developing strategies to improve them is a key to success.
In today’s read we’ll take a closer look at 5 common email stats you should be tracking on a regular basis.
Stat #1 – Open Rates (Low)
There are a couple of different things you should track when it comes to your open rates.
First – Low open rates can indicate that your subscribers are not interested enough in what you’re sending them to even bother opening your messages. This is not what you want to see.
A few things you can check and improve on are:
- Deliverability – are your emails even getting through?
- Subject Lines – This is the easiest to test as most autoresponders allow you to split test the subject line
- Sending Time – Try sending your emails at various times throughout the day and see which ones get the most opens
Stat #2 – Open Rates (High)
While low open rates can cause a red flag when it comes to your emails, a high open rate does not always guarantee a successful campaign either. If your open rates are high and you’re still not seeing a lot of success with your emails, then look at the click rate along with it.
If your opens are high and clicks are low, then it’s likely that something about the resources you’re sharing does not resonate with your audience. It could be a matter of price, timing, the number of offers in your newsletter, or just that what you’re offering isn’t something that will work for the majority of your subscribers.
Choosing the offers for your newsletters and email sequences is a bit of an art, and we’ll talk more about this another time. But one thing to keep in mind is that just because you like a product doesn’t mean it’s going to be a good fit for the people on your list.
Stat #3 – Clicks to Conversions
Another thing you want to track is the ratio of clicks to conversions. If people are clicking and buying, then you’ve got a great market to message match. You’ve found a great product that resonates with your audience, and they’re willing to open their wallets for you.
However, if you’ve got high clicks and low conversions, it could be for any of the reasons we listed above. Your readers are interested enough to take a look but the sales page isn’t enough to make them buy. This applies to both your own products, and also to affiliate products you’re promoting.
Look for disconnects between what you’re saying in your email and the page your readers are landing on.
Stat #4 – Overall Unsubscribe Rates
I talked a bit about unsubscribe rates in an earlier post and listed a few reasons why people might unsubscribe from your emails.
You are always going to get unsubscribes and it’s not something you can really control because everyone has their own reasons for both subscribing and unsubscribing. One way you can influence your unsubscribe rate is to really get to know your audience and build relationships with them – as a group and individually.
Stat #5 – Unsubscribes Per Sequence
If you have several products, or have been in several events, chances are you have a lot of difference sequences for your audience to be a part of. Some of these may be too long, some may be too short, and sometimes people just end up in the wrong sequence depending on what they signed up for.
I’ll be honest here – email automations are something I have not developed very well, and so this is a new area for me to experiment with. But my thought on this is that you should have more than one sequence option for your readers, and you should have some way to automate movement from one sequence to another. And, you should always pay attention to the unsubscribe rates across the sequences.
Autoresponders like Convert Kit have rules and automations to make this easy. And they also have ways to allow your subscribers to remove themselves from individual sequences but still stay on your overall list. Take the time to learn how the automation works on your email software and it will open some pretty big doors for you.
The bottom line is, you need to be paying attention to your metrics to know what’s working and what’s not. List building and the email marketing that follows it are both tasks that require consistent work, updating and tweaking to make sure you are giving your audience the best product you can.
And now, here are today’s deals…
Events On Now
When I made the decision to postpone the Low Content Bundle Sale, my main concern was my own mental health and well-being. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little concerned about how you would feel. Hearing from so many customers and contributors that they appreciate the break made me realize it was the right decision for everyone concerned. And it also gives me a chance to promote these two events which would have overlapped significantly and made it hard for my and all my affiliates to promote two or three events at the same time. So, instead of promoting my own product this week and next, I’m very excited to share these two events with you…
