Happy Saturday!
It’s really snowing here in Central Ontario this morning. I was going to go out and do some Christmas shopping this afternoon, but I’m feeling like it might have to wait until tomorrow. I don’t mind driving when there’s snow on the ground, but I’m not a fan of driving when it’s actually snowing and blowing.
So today I’m going to focus on getting work done and finishing up some projects before I take most of next week off to spend time with Shaun.
Do you have any projects that need finishing up before the end of the year? Today’s read might help…
Today’s Read: 6 Tips for Finishing What you Start
If you’re anything like me, the start of a project is always the fun part. The anticipation gets you going, the thought of new possibilities keeps the adrenaline flowing through the first part of the project. Then somewhere around the middle, the motivation starts to wane and pretty soon drops off entirely as you come up with a new project to start. Before you know it, you’ve stopped work and it just becomes another thing on your list that gets pushed to the bottom.
It doesn’t have to be that way. And I’ve found that the end of the year is a great time to reflect on all those unfinished projects and whether they can be finished, or just need to be let go of.
If you do decide to finish them, here are a few things that might help…
Tip #1 – Prioritize your projects
Before you jump in and begin something, ask yourself whether it’s really important. One key to finishing what you start is to not begin something that has little relevance in your life.
If you’re deciding what to finish, as yourself if this is something you really need to finish or if it’s something that can be let go of for now. It might have started as a good idea, but things happen between starting and finishing and it may no longer be relevant to your business.
Tip #2 – Assess the timing
Ask yourself if now is really the right time to be finishing a project. And if the answer is yes, then the next question should be whether you have the time to commit to finishing at this time. Make sure you consider everything going on in your life and how that will affect your working time.
Tip #3 – Commit to Finishing
After determining that a project is important enough to finish and it’s the right time, commit to it. When you make this type of commitment, write out exactly what you plan to do. Write down each step. Plan to finish all steps within a time frame that’s acceptable to you. Plan your project and then go forward with each step according to your plan.
Tip #4 – Evaluate your energy level
This is such an important step, and one a lot of people don’t think about. Always pay attention to your energy levels and notice when your peak work times are. If you have other commitments to family, friends, etc. make sure you take the amount of energy required for that into consideration as well. Then re-evaluate whether this half-finished project is something you need to be spending energy on at this time.
Tip #5 – Think about the end result
If you finish the project, how will it affect your life? Will it move your business forward? Will your everyday life be better? Will it be mostly unchanged? Will you feel a sense of pride and completion? Spend some time reflecting on the experience of finishing the project.
Tip #6 – Set realistic expectations
Finally, be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish and set realistic expectations for yourself. It helps if you can do this in the beginning of a project so that you have a better chance of finishing it from the get-go. But, if you do find yourself with lots of half-finished projects begging to be finished, it also is good to assess your time and commitments and be willing re-assess whether an expectation of finishing this project is realistic or if it’s something that can be let go of or rescheduled for another time.
