“Your account has been suspended” – I was going to make this the subject line of today’s email, and then I thought better of it because those are words to instill fear in any online business owner, and that’s exactly what happened to me last night!
I got a message from Birdsend around 8 p.m. last night telling me my account had been suspended for violation of their acceptable use policy.
I immediately went in to my account – I could still access everything, just couldn’t send email or have any new signups – not great when I’m in TWO giveaways right now and with the bundle sale coming up. That’s a lot of email!
But I digress… I went into my account and immediately exported my contact list so I’d have a copy in case the worst happened and I lost everything. The second thing I did was open a help ticket and ask what I had done wrong and how to fix it.
After a couple of stressful hours of waiting while they looked into it, it turned out there was a technical glitch and my account was restored.
Whew! Crisis averted, but it highlighted a couple of things for me…
First – you have to have a backup plan. Fortunately, I have a lifetime account at SendFox that I don’t use right now and since I was able to get my contact list I could easily have set up an emergency list over there.
Second – Back Up your list at least once a week! As with any 3rd party platform that you don’t control, you could lose your data at any time. Personally, I’ve worked way too hard to build my list to lose it on a technical glitch.
Third – Always keep an eye on the terms and conditions of your providers to make sure they haven’t changed. Mel and I were looking at the AUP last night after this happened, and we noticed that they’ve changed it to be much more restrictive than it was when we signed up for the service.
Fourth – Don’t be afraid to make changes to your content to ensure compliance. That means I’ll be changing up the format of these daily newsletters a bit just to make sure they don’t trigger an automated response that gets me shut down. I never want to go through this again (although after 20 years online, it’s pretty much a given that this will happen again in the future.)
You’ll still get all the daily deals and goodies every day, but I will be adding more informational and educational content to go along with the “laundry list.” This is something I’ve had on my radar to start doing anyways, so really this just forced my hand to stop procrastinating on it.
