Happy Friday!

Yay! By the time you are reading this, I should be face down getting a lovely acupuncture treatment on my back! I was going to send this yesterday, but the day completely got away from me. And then Shaun wanted to take me to get groceries last night since he’s leaving again for the weekend tomorrow, and he didn’t want me to have to leave the house if there’s bad weather while he’s gone.

Yesterday I started getting all my Valentine’s items ready to put on sale, and updating the Valentine’s Day Resources page for you. I think I’ve got most of this year’s products added and have checked the links to the older products to make sure they haven’t been retired. I’ll get stuff from the graphics sites added over the next few days for you too. This is a great example of reusable content – I’ve had this post since 2019 and just update it with the new stuff every year and take out any old products that are no longer for sale.

Today’s Read: Four Tips for Improving Email Deliverability

Email deliverability is about how your audience is receiving your emails. It includes keeping track of your bounce rate and increasing the safety and authentication of your email and internet service provider to ensure your emails don’t get rejected or end up in your subscribers’ spam folders. It’s likely obvious to state, but if your bounce rate is high, your readers are not getting your content, and this can have an overall effect on how email providers view your content.

Here are four things you can do to improve your email deliverability:

#1 – Beef Up Your Opt-in Process

I know most people don’t like to use double opt-in forms, but it really does help to ensure your subscriber information is correct. Something as simple as an incorrect email address or typo can easily lead to your email being rejected. Double opt-in forms require your readers to confirm their information to avoid errors like this. They also have an added benefit of enticing people to not use a throwaway address to sign up for your lead magnets. If they know they won’t get the freebie unless they give a real address and confirm it, you’ll be getting a higher quality subscriber.

#2 – Create a Sending Schedule and Stick to It

Knowing how often to mail is really a fine line and totally dependent on your audience. If you send too many emails, they might see it as spam, and you will lose their trust. If your content gets marked as spam, eventually, their email service provider will reject you altogether. It is important to note, too, that spam or being marked as spam won’t just affect the one reader. If the email service provider notices a pattern, it will also start rejecting messages from other email addresses as a safety precaution.

#3 – Enable SPF and DKIM

I’m not going to go into great detail on this right now, but… enabling both SPF and DKIM is essential to ensuring your email address does not get spoofed or risk hackers taking over your customer’s information. In addition, this information tells your internet service provider to authenticate your email address and prevents others from using the information.

But here’s the thing… it doesn’t really work with a free email address, and is a huge reason why most email service providers will not allow you to use a free email address as your sending email. These are enabled on your server which means to send properly authenticated emails to your list, you MUST have a domain, a hosting account, and a domain based email for your company. It’s not a hard thing to do, and all the big email companies provide very clear directions on how to set this up, but you can’t do it if you’re relying on free email and a third party site.

#4 – Make it Easy to Unsubscribe

Most people worry overmuch about unsubscribes. And I did too when I was just starting out. But the truth is unsubscribes are a fact of life, and unless you lose like 20 or 30 percent of your list from one message, they aren’t really worth worrying about. Circumstances change, interests change, and you’re not going to be a good fit for everyone.

Making it easy for people who don’t want to be on your list to leave also helps improve your deliverability and other metrics because if they don’t really want to be on your list, they’re not going to open your emails anyways. This way you keep the people who are really interested in seeing your content on the list and get much better open rates and engagement, which in return results in better deliverability to the people who do want to be on your list.

Email deliverability isn’t really rocket science. It takes some diligence on your part to make sure the people on your list really want to be there, and give them an easy way to get out if they change their minds. These tips should get you started at least thinking about what you need to do in order to ensure your messages end up in the inbox of your subscribers, and not their spam folders.
