Happy Wednesday!

We’re getting ready for another few days of snow here in Central Ontario. As soon as I get this out to you, I’m off to the grocery store so that I don’t have to leave the house again for a couple of days. And it’s not that I mind the snow at all… I really love the white stuff, and love being out in it, especially on a trail where I can just walk and use my poles. The problem in the city is that they don’t usually bring out the plows until it stops snowing so it makes driving a bit of a tricky proposition, especially when your car is low to the ground like mine is.

Before we dive into today’s roundup (there have been a lot of great releases already this week), I have something I want to talk to you about…

First off, a huge thank you to everyone who chimed in on my request for comments on whether I should continue these long emails or let them go and replace them with something else. If you missed that discussion and want to have your say, it’s in the Facebook group on last Sunday’s roundup post.  

Newsletter format is something that I wrestle with on an ongoing basis. Is it too long? Is it too short? Are there too many offers? Too much or not enough information? Do I tell enough stories? (Probably not as that’s not really my strong suit). A lot of the time the only way I have to tell is through the unsubscribe numbers, because other than a few vocal subscribers who email me once in awhile, it seems like the majority of people who read my newsletter are a lot like me – we don’t share our opinions very often, even when asked for them!

So, I’ve been thinking a lot about what to do with these long roundup style newsletters for awhile now. And I’ve been guilty of doing the one thing I tell people not to do… I’ve been comparing my newsletter to those of some of my friends and finding myself coming up lacking because I’m not as good at the storytelling, or the opinion writing, or the conversational lesson as they are. None of those are my strong suits and try as I might I will never be as good as those who can write that way naturally.

So, what is my strong suit? In a word – research. Two words – sharing information.

Up until just a couple of years ago, I was a historical researcher, and my specialty was document searches. In fact, I didn’t drop my last client until just before the pandemic started because there are so many interesting projects in my field to work on.

All that to say, I’m good at finding information and sharing it. That’s my strong suit, and I think my newsletter reflects that. And I should probably be practicing what I preach and doing what fits me instead of comparing myself to everyone else. So, after much thinking about it and taking into consideration the comments in that Facebook post, the basic format won’t be changing any time soon.

I’m doing me, and sharing information is the thing I do best. And when it comes to your newsletters, you should do you and format yours in the way that suits you best. Play to your strengths and share that with your readers. It’s the best way I know to build that relationship I’m always harping at you about.
